Rising sea temperatures caused by climate change is a considerable challenge for small-island nations around the world. Action is key, and Dominica is leading the cause with its intent to become the first climate resilient nation in the world.
The Commonwealth of Dominica, known as the Nature Isle of the Caribbean, is renowned for its natural beauty. Now, following the most challenging hurricane season in the nation’s history, Dominica is becoming known for more than its lush green foliage and crystal clear natural waters. With the goal to be the world’s first completely climate resilient nation, the Government has launched CREAD – the Climate Resilient Execution Agency of Dominica.
Born with the remit to not only combat climate change but rebuild Dominica sustainability, the approach has garnered worldwide attention, including high profile donors like former U.S. President Bill Clinton. Intent on encouraging further funding of the nation’s efforts, the former President urged investors to act: “Don’t let this go. Don’t give up on the world’s best chance. You’ve got a laboratory that could become the jewel of the world.”
The United Kingdom also pledged their support, with a commitment of US$90 million to go towards creating a climate resilient Dominica. The World Bank also followed suit, announcing US$17 million in funding for the geothermal plant to be built on the island. Commitment from both the public and private sector indicates growing confidence in the island’s goals.
Alongside the building of climate resilient infrastructure and the installation of green energy, the rise of eco-tourism on the island also aligns to the country’s ethos. With luxury brands such as the Hilton, Marriott, and Kempinski currently developing projects on the island, visitors can enjoy creature comforts while at the same time being immersed in nature. Simultaneously, these developments on the island are an important aspect in stimulating the economy, and creating jobs for locals.
Aside from the island’s natural virtues, these real estate projects are also attached to the country’s government-legislated Citizenship by Investment Programme (CBI), which is a dominant source of foreign direct investment for the island. One of the longest running programmes in the world, Dominica’s CBI welcomes individuals and families to invest in the nation’s future. By contributing to the Government’s Economic Diversification Fund, or Pre-Approved Real Estate, you can receive all the benefits of being Dominican, including the title of belonging to a progressive nation striving to be the first climate resilient nation in the world.]]>
